Clever: the Nationwide Mobile app

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Maybe I’m just an iPhone-junkie, but I thought this new app from Nationwide Insurance was a pretty clever use of technology. It’s useful, free, ties into their “on your side” positioning and gives users a direct line to Nationwide services. Plus, you can get it even if you’re not a Nationwide customer. So yes, I downloaded it. Whether it makes me switch to Nationwide remains to be seen, but I am blogging about them now so something’s working.

p.s. These are images from Nationwide… that’s not my car!

Just for… job hunters?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Have you seen any of the Just For Men tv spots? In one, they feature a dad whose son gets accepted to college, and he’s worried about how to afford it. So, he dyes his hair and next thing we know, junior is at the podium speaking at his college graduation.

Another, for their Touch of Gray product, shows a gentleman job hunting. He decides his dyed hair shows energy, while his gray hair shows experience. The perfect solution? A little bit of both.

I applaud manufacturer Combe for tapping into such a widespread concern (and at 8.9% unemployment, I think we can all agree job hunting is a pretty widespread concern). But it is a bit of an, um, overpromise? Dye your hair and land a job! And also, perhaps a little insulting to our gray-haired friends? What do you think?
